EurOcean_KG Search Tips
EurOcean_KG is divided into 2 main interlinked components in order to facilitate navigation: Projects and Knowledge Outputs (KOs) – please refer to Technical Note page for the definition of the Knowledge Output (KO) concept. A temporary component to include specific information gathered through the STAGES project is now available: the Marine Directive Component. This component includes all the projects surveyed through STAGES with potential in providing scientific underpinning for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and give support for its implementation. Note that the search options of this component are included under the Projects Component. For easy navigation, please note that once a search option is chosen in one of the components (e.g. Projects; Programme: FP7) the system reproduces the same search options in the other component (e.g. KOs; Programme: FP7). The Reset option allows deleting the infobase search query in a single step. Additionally, the system includes an Updating Functionality allowing the user to add new Projects and KOs and update existing Projects and KOs (please refer to section below).
‘Projects’ Component
Programmes: allows for searching Projects with European or National funding; while National funded Projects are not searchable by specific ‘National’ Funding Programmes (due to the extremely high diversity of schemes), all the EU Funding Programmes are included under the option ‘European’. Note that if no specific EU Funding Programme is selected, all the Projects with EU funding are retrieved. Due to the large number of European Funding Programmes, those with a smaller amount of projects included in the infobase (i.e. less than 100 projects) are grouped under the option ‘OTHERS’, which can be further unfolded to search for the Projects under any of the Programmes available. Free Text: searches in the Project Acronym, Title and Summary. Note that the ‘Free Text’, although not case sensitive, searches in the exact order of the terms included. Institutions: searches in the Institution Acronym and Name, in English or in native language whenever the official English name is not available, and retrieves all the Projects in which the institution selected is involved in the Project Consortium either as coordinator or as partner; the auto-complete functionality allows the user to easily select an option from the list of available institutions. Note that when writing terms in the ‘Free Text’ box without selecting an available institution from the drop-down menu, the search retrieves all the projects with institutions including the search terms in their names or acronyms. Note that ‘funding’ organisations from projects under ’NATIONAL’ are not searchable. Institutions are available for all the Programmes available in the infobase, except for Eureka and SMAP. Countries 2: allows for a cross-search once a Continent or a Country is selected under the ‘Countries’ search option, and retrieves the Projects in which the 2 options selected are part of the Project Consortium (e.g. projects in which Continent or Country “X” AND Continent or Country “Y” participate either as coordinators or as partners). Project Funding: allows for searching Projects by intervals of EU Funding Allocation; the intervals offered have been selected in order to provide the best possible representation of the universe of information (please refer to Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Funding in the Homepage Interactive Graphs section below).
‘Marine Directive’ Component (temporary)
Marine Directive Projects: allows for searching Projects that are potentially relevant for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) research and implementation. Marine Directive Descriptors: allows for searching Projects by Good Environmental Status (GES) Descriptors. This search can also be performed through a homepage graph (please refer to Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Marine Directive Descriptors in the Homepage Interactive Graphs section below).
‘Knowledge Outputs (KOs)’ Component
Programmes: allows for searching KOs from projects with European or National funds; while KOs from National funded projects are not searchable by specific ‘National’ Funding Programmes (due to the extremely high diversity of schemes), the KOs from projects from EU Funding Programmes are included under the option ‘European’. Note that if no specific EU Funding Programme is selected, all the KOs from projects with EU funding are retrieved. Due to the large number of European Funding Programmes, those with a smaller amount of projects included in the infobase (i.e. less than 100 projects) are grouped under the option ‘OTHERS’, which can be further unfolded to search for the KOs from projects under any of the Programmes available. KOs are available for all the Programmes available in the infobase, except for Eureka and SMAP. Any Project Coordinator from the different Programmes available in EurOcean_KG is encouraged to add KOs through the ‘Add KO’ and/or ‘Update KO’ functionalities (please refer to the Updating Functionality section below). Free Text: searches in the KO Title and Description as well as in the Acronym of the Related/Source Project. Note that the ‘Free Text’, although not case sensitive, searches in the exact order of the terms included. KO Type: allows for searching KOs by categories of knowledge items produced in the course of research projects. Note that the KO Type classification was created in the context of the MarineTT Project. Potential End Users: allows for searching KOs by the users that might benefit from them, according to the project coordinators; note that the classification for Potential End Users of the KOs was created in the context of the MarineTT Project. Sectors to Benefit: allows for searching KOs by the Sectors and Subsectors to potentially benefit from them; note that the classification Sectors/Subsectors of the KOs was created in the context of the MarineTT Project. Publicly Available: allows searching for those KOs with information available in the public domain; relevant links are provided when possible. Note that the ‘Unknown’ category is for those records were there is no information on whether the KO is publicly available or not. KO Status: allows for searching KOs that are completed. Note that the ‘In Progress’ category refers to those KOs that were not completed at the time that the information was provided by the Project Coordinators through the corresponding survey projects (i.e. MarineTT Survey in July - October 2010, STAGES Survey in February – May 2013, AquaInnova Survey in , MG4U Survey in ). Although this information is to be further updated in due time, we advise you to contact the Project Coordinator for updated information on a specific KO. Countries 2: allows for a cross-search once a Continent or a Country is selected under the ‘Countries’ search option, and retrieves the KOs generated by the projects in which the 2 options selected are part of the Project Consortium (e.g. projects in which Continent or Country “X” AND Continent or Country “Y” participate either as coordinators or as partners of the projects generating the KOs). Project Funding: allows searching for KOs by intervals of EU Funding allocated to the projects generating the KOs; the intervals offered have been selected in order to provide the best possible representation of the universe of information (please refer to Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Funding in the Homepage Interactive Graphs section below).
Homepage Interactive Graphs
The homepage graphs represent the information available at any time when accessing the EurOcean_KG, in terms of number of ‘Projects’ and ‘Knowledge Outputs (KOs)’ by Programme, Country and Funding. All these graphs are interactive and bring the user to the list of records under the selected category (e.g. list of projects under the COST Programme; list of KOs under the FP6 Programme; list of projects in which UK is part of the Project Consortium; list of KOs in which France is part of the Project Consortium; list of projects with less than 300K Euros of EU Funding; list of KOs generated by projects with EU Funding between 600K and 900K Euros).
Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Programmes
The information available in the EurOcean_KG is presented in terms of number of Projects and, when available, number of KOs by each of the existing Programmes.
Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Countries
The information available in the EurOcean_KG is presented in terms of the top countries participating, both as Project Coordinator and Partner, in the highest number of Projects and associated KOs generated under those projects. Note that the KOs are assigned to the Project Consortium.
Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Funding
The information available in the EurOcean_KG is presented in terms of the number of Projects within intervals of allocated EU Funding and associated KOs generated under those projects. The intervals have been selected in order to provide the best possible representation of the universe of information, with smaller intervals (300K Euros) for those funding ranges with the highest number of Projects and bigger intervals (1M Euros or higher) for those ranges of funding with less number of Projects. Note that the KOs are assigned to the funding interval of the corresponding project.
Projects and Knowledge Outputs by Marine Directive Descriptors (temporary)
The information available in the EurOcean_KG is presented in terms of the number of Projects and corresponding KOs by each of the Good Environmental Status (GES) Descriptors. Note that the KOs are assigned to the GES Descriptor of the corresponding project.
Updating Functionality
This functionality allows the user to Add new / Update existing Projects and KOs. Note that new KOs can only be added to existing Projects. After submitting the information on a new Project the user is provided a link to insert a new KO to the Project proposal. Note that the information submitted will be validated by the EurOcean Team before being displayed in the Marine Knowledge Gate.
Mandatory fields to submit:
✓  Contact details of the person submitting: Name and Email fields provide the minimum information required for the EurOcean Team to validate the source of the information.
✓  Basic details on the ‘Project’: Acronym, Title, Programme and Coordinator Country.
Non-mandatory fields to submit:
Observations field:
The Observations field (right after the contact details of the person submitting) provides the user a space to include any additional explanations, issues or feedback. Additionally, the Observations box also allows the user to include new categories that are not yet offered in the available drop-down menus. Please include the new option after selecting the option ‘Other’ at the bottom of the list provided in the drop-down menus. The fields with drop-down menus with the category ‘Other’ are the following:

    ○  For Projects: FP7 Theme, FP7 Funding Instrument/Contract Type
    ○  For KOs: KO Type, KO Sectors and Subsectors to potentially benefit

As there are several fields with drop-down menus, the user is requested to provide the information in the Observations box in the following format: Field Name – new option (e.g. FP7 Theme – Health; Sector and Subsectors to potentially benefit – Ocean Energy; Thermal Energy) Please note that the category ‘Not Available’ means that the information is actually unknown, whereas the category ‘Other’ means that the category the user wants to add is missing from the list of a specific drop-down menu.
Coordinator Institution / Other Institutions Involved fields:
The auto-complete functionality allows the user to easily select an option from the list of available institutions. Nevertheless, the system also allows the user to write down the name of an institution that has not yet been included in the system. In such cases, the user is requested to follow the following format for harmonisation purposes:

    English or Native Acronym – English or Native Name (Country);
E.g. EurOcean – EurOcean Foundation (Portugal)

Please note that institutions are currently available only for FP6 and FP7 projects.
Add buttons / Red crosses
‘Add buttons’ allow users to include the category selected from the drop-down menus of the fields Other Countries Involved and Other Institutions Involved.
[X]     ‘Red crosses’ allow users to delete one by one the countries and institutions from the fields Other Countries Involved and Other Institutions Involved under an existing ‘Project’.
